Wake County voters cast 334,127 ballots during the 17-day early voting period that ended Saturday, nearly 115,000 more than the 219,169 cast in 2022 and about 38% of the county's 870,308 eligible voters, according to unofficial county figures. "2026 early voting increased by roughly 53% when compared to 2022," Spencer Berg, deputy director of the Wake County Board of Elections, said in an email. The Wake Weekly

Batteries
If you've got old phones, tablets, cordless vacuums or power tools around, North Carolina will prohibit throwing their lithium-ion batteries in landfills and permitted incinerators starting Dec. 1, 2026, and Wake County is urging you to keep them out of household trash and recycling bins and take them to designated collection sites. A January 2025 fire damaged the North Wake Household Hazardous Waste facility, with repairs estimated at about $1.6 million. Holly Springs Update
Schools
Teachers at dozens of Wake County schools are still waiting on printed instructional materials that would normally have arrived before the second quarter began last week. Teachers were told the district's printer hadn't released delivery dates for second-quarter math materials for traditional-calendar elementary schools and English language arts materials for middle schools.
